The Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary

The Austin Zoo is home to over 100 different species of animals, and there are over 300 animals living at the zoo. The zoo is located west of Austin on Rawhide Trail, which can be found by turning off of Highway 290 West shortly after its intersection with Highway 71 West, onto Thomas Springs Road, which intersects with Rawhide Trail a few miles down the road

The Austin Zoo includes educational facilities and beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens, as well as habitats for bears, lions, and numerous exotic birds and reptiles. A petting zoo allows visitors to have close contact with harmless species of animals, and patrons can purchase feed at a nominal cost in order to interact more closely with the animals, which is a special treat for children visiting the zoo.

The primary purpose of the sanctuary is to provide rescue, rehabilitation and education to assist animals in the zoo. The zoo had over 200,000 visitors last year, and is a

Austin Neighborhood Profiles : Allandale

Allandale is the name of a lovely neighborhood in central Austin, although the area was originally considered to be northwest Austin, before Austin’s expansion into a large metropolitan area. Allandale recently celebrated its 35th anniversary as an active central Austin community, and the Allandale Neighborhood Association has been a presence in the neighborhood since 1973. Currently, Allandale is home to over 21,000 residents, and two of the boundaries of the neighborhood are the MoPac Expressway and Burnet Road, which form the western and eastern perimeters, respectively.

Typical residences in Allandale are three to four bedroom single family homes, most within the 0,000 to 0,000 price range, although more and less expensive housing can be found too. The students in Allendale attend Austin Independent School District schools, and there is an elementary school named Gullet Elementary, as well as a middle school named Lamar and a high school

A tribute to the Texas Longhorn Football program. This is a compilation of video and pictures that shows the images that every Longhorn fan should know about. TEXAS FIGHT! Please leave a comment and/or rating.

Abbott and Costello Visit the Ncaa Football Ranks

Don’t you just love this time of year? Wait a minute… This isn’t the usual autumn Saturday in the NCAA ranks. The leftover unbeatens are now dropping from the top 5 as the 6-10 make their push in this merry-go-round with the pollers.

I believe we can determine now that it’s going to be a miracle to see anything over 1 undefeated team from major conferences. So now comes the speculation on who’s going to be there when the time comes to set the bowls, and better yet, who’s coming out on top of this poll?

Just to give you a quick glimpse of my own top 5 (I am a UGA fan, but no bias here)..

#5 USC – Back to their old defensive ways in a 28-0 rout of a major disappointment in an Arizona State team that was supposed to give the Pac-10 teams a run for their money. The 1-loss teams are now beginning to seep into the top 5 as the Trojans get back into title talks.

#4 Florida – After dismantling the LSU Tigers by 30, they are back on their feet

The Texas Longhorns have another tune up game in Austin when the UTEP Miners travel across the state from El Paso to take on the Horns. The Texas Offense needs to look a lot more crisp before the Horns get to the meat of their schedule. Hook Em Horns and Texas Fight!!

College Football – Ed Bagley’s Top 25 Poll – Week 6

College football’s sixth week of competition was full of surprises for the four teams which lost their unbeaten status, and for the rest of the major college teams that learned why Florida started the season on top of the polls and remains on top after the sixth week of play.

Here are this week’s picks for Ed Bagley’s Top 25 Poll:

1) Florida – Traveled to No. 4 LSU and its mighty defense and lukewarm offense and won 13-3. Now you know why the Gators are No. 1 and LSU will be sliding in this poll.

2) Alabama – Traveled to No. 20 Mississippi to meet “the golden arm” Jevan Snead, who threw 4 interceptions as the Crimson Tide won 22-3. Here again, gone again. I am kicking Ole Miss out of my poll.

3) Virginia Tech – I thought Iowa was lame and now Texas is worse. The Hokies look more serious than Iowa and Texas put together.

4) Oregon – Lost its season opener and then got religion. Beat Utah, beat California

Florida started the season as the No. 1 pick in the AP Top 25 Poll and will remain No. 1 for the 7th straight week after beating the No. 4 Louisiana State Tigers in Baton Rouge, 13-3, in this season’s biggest match-up featuring two Top 5 teams.

The Gators’ swarming defense silenced the Tiger crowd to win their 15th consecutive game, the longest current win streak among major schools, and LSU had its 32-game winning streak in Saturday night games snapped. LSU, ranked last in the SEC in total offense coming into the game, never got untracked and could muster only 162 yards.

Tim Tebow, the heart of Florida’s offense and former Heisman Trophy winner, returned after suffering a concussion two weeks ago. Tebow’s presence helped assure the Gators that they would remain on top with a top effort. LSU started the game with a perfect 5-0 mark and ended it with a 5-1 record. Florida remains unbeaten at an overall 5-0 and sits on top

Tulsa the 19th Best Team in the Nation? You Must be Kididng and Here is Why

Entering college football’s 10th week of play there were 8 unbeaten teams remaining—Texas, Alabama, Penn State, Texas Tech, Utah, Boise State, Ball State and Tulsa. Penn State was 9-0, Boise State and Tulsa were 7-0 and the other 5 were 8-0.

Everyone paying attention knew that either Texas or Texas Tech would suffer their first loss as they were playing each other at Texas Tech. Few knew just how vulnerable Utah, Boise State, Ball State and Tulsa were to suffering their first defeat.

The AP Top 25 Poll had Texas as 1st, Alabama 2nd, Penn State 3rd, Texas Tech 6th, Utah 10th, Boise State 11th, Ball State 18th and Tulsa 19th.

Jeff Sagarin’s Football Ratings and Schedule Rankings do not draw a lot of attention from the 65 national press representatives who cast ballots each week to determine the AP Top 25 Poll. The pundits do not talk or write about Sagarin very often, but there is much to be

Austin’s New Urban Village : the Old Airport Revitalization

Austin’s New Urban Village : the Old Airport Revitalization

An area of Austin which is currently undergoing revitalization is the old Mueller Airport area, near the intersection of Manor Road and Airport Boulevard in East Central Austin. This location offers residents and visitors alike many interesting opportunities. Housing is very affordable in the area, including single family homes and duplexes, and also numerous nice but inexpensive apartment complexes.  Since this area is just a few miles from the University of Texas campus, it is ideal for students and faculty members, as well as downtown area employees who are looking for a neighborhood which is affordable yet extremely close to downtown business and entertainment districts and the college area. Manor Road itself is home to many fine restaurants, including El Chile, and El Gringo, both wonderful restaurants specializing in Mexican cuisine,  and Hoover’s , a southern-style restaurant  specializing in BBQ and various other regional Texas specialties. The Eastside

Ed Bagley’s Top 25 Poll – Week 10 – Oregon Is Moving Down Fast

Iowa, Oregon, Penn State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and California all lost ground in the AP Top 25 Poll this week. All of them also lost ground in my Top 25 Poll this week with the exception of Oklahoma—I kicked Oklahoma out of my Poll some time ago, and the Sooners will not find their way back into my Poll anytime soon. Here is how I see it this week:

1) Alabama (9-0) The Crimson Tide won a 24-15 signature victory over the 9th-ranked Louisiana State (LSU) Tigers this week. No team had a bigger win against a better opponent. With the pressure to perform on, Alabama came through to remain unbeaten. The Tide travels to Mississippi State this week.

2) Florida (9-0) The Gators beat a very weak, 119th-ranked, 2-8 Vanderbilt team this week, 27-3. They remain behind Alabama because this was not a killer performance.

3) Texas (9-0) The Longhorns remained unbeaten with a dominating 35-3 win over 83rd-ranked Central Florida;

The Road to the National Championship!

Ed Bagley’s Top 25 Poll – Week 7

Copyright © 2009 Ed Bagley

It was a good week to be Florida, Alabama, Texas, Cincinnati, Boise State, Iowa and TCU—all won, and all are the only unbeaten major teams left in the nation. Every one of them are beatable, the only monster thing about any of them are the college publicity departments that promote them. Here’s my Top 25 for the 7th week:

1) Alabama (7-0) – Hosted and beat a really game 5-1 South Carolina team 20-6, and is on track for a head-on collision with Florida for the SEC championship and a shot at the national title. Guess who has the best total defense in the nation? Answer: Alabama.

2) Florida (6-0) – Needed a 27-yard field goal at home with 9 seconds left to beat a 3-2 Arkansas team, 23-20, and keep the Razorbacks from pulling off the biggest upset of the year. Florida can be beat. Gators are still the defending national champions. Alabama beat Arkansas 35-7 at home. Guess who has the second best total defense in the nation?
